Author: Dianne Duvall
Release Date: September 2, 2014
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Vampires
Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians protect humanity from unspeakable horrors–but their hearts are as fragile as any mortal’s. . .
For centuries, Lisette d’Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can’t bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians’ command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for–and a man she knows has been declared a traitor.
Zach is an exile, a loner. He won’t defend himself against false accusations or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he’ll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of super-vamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?
Zach spent more time admiring Lisette during the fights than he did combating the vampires.
She was such a fascinating combination of fragility and strength, of vulnerability and ferocity. The way she wielded her shoto swords, the agility with which she evaded the weapons of her opponents . . .
It just made him want to pounce.
The last vampire in the second battle fell.
Zach collected the vampires’ weapons and tried to get his mind off all of the things he would be doing to Lisette if they were in the privacy of her bedroom.
The bowie knives, folding knives, and machetes were all of poor quality. Some of the blades had broken upon contact with Lisette’s superior shoto swords. “What do you think?” he asked, holding them up. “Toss them?”
Zach zipped away to toss them in a Dumpster, then returned to her.
Lisette finished tucking her weapons away and handed him his.
She smiled and grabbed the vampires’ sticky clothing.
“What?” Zach asked as he helped.
“Nothing. It’s just . . . ” She straightened. “I like that you let me be me,” she said with a shrug. “I like that you think I’m strong.”
“You ARE strong.”
“But you also appreciate my femininity.”
“I more than appreciate it,” he said with a leer.
She grinned. “Yet you aren’t overprotective like my brothers and Seth, all of whom can drive me up the wall sometimes.”
“Oh, but I am. I cringe every time a battle arises. And my inner Neanderthal awakens whenever I think you’re in danger.”
“Your inner Neanderthal?”
He nodded. “I believe you met him when I ordered you to never defy me again.”
She winked. “Your inner Neanderthal gave me multiple orgasms.”
And wanted to give her more.
“And if you really WERE Neanderthal-ish, you would have found some way to keep me at David’s and gone hunting without me these last few nights.”
“I knew you would never forgive me if I did,” he admitted. “And I didn’t want to—I don’t know—stifle you.”
She crossed to him and rose onto her toes to kiss his cheek. “You see? You let me be me.”
“Because I love you as you are. Even when you scare the crap out of me by putting yourself in danger.”
He brushed a kiss across her lips, then a second and a third. “You are so tempting.”
The “Immortal Guardians Series” is one of my favorite paranormal series of all time. The world Dianne creates is full of such life and fantasy; the characters so unique. I laughed throughout this book; connecting to the romance, which was so lighthearted and filled with happiness. I could not put it down and became addicted from the first page.
You become so involved with the characters; the book just pulls you into their world and you don’t want it to end. I think that Lisette and Zach are meant to be together. That’s what makes the story so much better. The speak between the two is unyielding, enthralling. and only making you want more. This is the first book focused on a female from the “Immortal Guardians Series.” I have to say I was not disappointed.
The characters with their banter was funny, charming, and witty. I loved how honest Lisette and Zach are with one another; instantly having such a strong connection and fitting together like true soul mates.
But, this book is not all about romance! There is plenty of action and mystery as well. The Immortal Guardians have to band together to stop a major threat, which kept this read exciting; you never got bored!
So of course, I had to give this book 5 stars! I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. I am riveted and in complete agony waiting, but I know that it will be another superb read!
